Now that spring has begun, the Town of Okotoks will be busy completing some major infrastructure projects.

Even though there is snow on the ground, the Town has already begun work on two major projects, which will help support the community while it grows, upgrade aging infrastructure, and enhance community spaces.

One of the projects underway is one of the biggest projects the Town is currently undertaking, is the Foothills Okotoks Regional Water Project, which is happening in the Sheep River Valley.

This project will help secure a sustainable water supply for the community for years to come.

As part of this work, crews will tie in a new water main, which requires heavy equipment and drilling.

The work began earlier this month and is expected to be completed by June 30, as long as the weather cooperates, and the equipment remains available.

"We know this is a well-loved area, and we appreciate the community’s patience as we complete this critical work," explained Jeremy Huet, operations & utilities director for the Town of Okotoks in a media release. "We understand that temporary disruptions of this nature can be challenging to navigate, but we’re also looking forward to the positive impacts this project will have on our community for years to come."

Another project that is being completed in town is the Regional Water Project, which will see North Railway Street closed between 32 St E and 40 Street E from March 31 to April 22.

There are detours in place 24/7 along North Railway Street, which will send drivers on a detour along 48 Street E to Milligan Drive.

While the work is being completed, the road closure will prevent vehicle access to several amenities, including Bill Robertson Park, which includes the pump track, soccer fields, ball diamond, volleyball court, and accessible playground.

Parking will be available at the Okotoks Operations Centre for those who wish to enjoy those amenities.

The closure on North Railway Street will also prevent vehicle access to Tourmaline and Conrad Fields, and the Seaman Stadium parking lot won't have access from North Railway Street, with the only access to the Stadium being on Don Seaman Way on 32 Street E.

Not only that, but the Town is preparing to launch Phase One of its Downtown Improvements Project along North Railway Street this spring, which will cause temporary closures and detours.

"This project is all about creating a more welcoming and connected downtown - with inviting public spaces and improved accessibility," said Jeff Greene, Director of Community Growth & Identity in the media release. "The upgrades will also help local businesses thrive and support long-term economic growth in Okotoks."

During the first phase of the project, they will be replacing the aging sewer and water lines, burying overhead power lines, installing a roundabout at Lineham, Ave and North Railway Street, and enhancing Triangle and Pisttoo Park.
