Last week, Scotia Place released another construction update video, announcing that the project has achieved a major milestone.
According to the update, the final construction pile is now in place. There are around 1100 piles for the project, with the first one installed on September 6.
The update shared that 150 of the piles are foundation piles, while the rest support shoring walls during excavation and construction.
Since excavation began in July 2024, crews have dug more than 10 meters down to accommodate the sunken event bowl. This feature ensures seamless accessibility between the main concourse and the outdoor plaza.
In December 2024, the Calgary Planning Commission unanimously approved the project’s final development permit, paving the way for the next construction phase to start on schedule once excavation wraps up in the spring.
According to its website, "Scotia Place will be Alberta’s newest premier sports and entertainment venue. It will play a defining role in transforming Calgary’s downtown, the emerging Culture + Entertainment District and the nearby spaces."
Scotia Place is set to host the NHL’s Calgary Flames, the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen, the NLL’s Calgary Roughnecks, and the AHL’s Wranglers. In addition to sports, it will feature a community rink, restaurants, retail spaces, and public plazas designed for year-round activity.
Situated within Calgary’s Rivers District Master Plan, Scotia Place will anchor the area’s revitalization with festival streets, outdoor gathering spaces, and enhanced transit connections. The adjacent Victoria Park/Stampede LRT Station and a future 6th Street SE underpass will ensure easy access for visitors.
