“We focus on relationships and quality construction,” Popick says. “I want to get to know these people. We’re building them their home- we want to make it a good experience.”
Chris of Popick Homes and his wife Amy built their first house on spec in Swift Current back in 2006. Soon after, Chris decided to join the family business, then called Popick Homes Ltd., alongside his parents Mick, Jacqui, and brother Cory. In 2015, Chris and Amy took over the business, becoming the sole proprietors. This new chapter included a name change, calling for a new logo, web page, fresh stationery and business swag branded with the name Popick Homes Inc., all built with the help of Pebble Creatives Caitlin Mann.
“I want clients to feel like they are getting exactly what they want, and I think that the tradespeople that we work with give them the best quality.”
New construction has always been the main focal point for Popick Homes Inc. In the early 2000s, spec homes were a large part of the business, with custom homes being second. Now, Popick works predominantly on custom builds, including new homes through insurance rebuilds, garages, shops, and occasional small commercial jobs.
The Popick Process starts with an initial meeting- a sit-down chat to discuss the client’s wants and needs, as well as how they live.
“Everybody lives in their homes a little bit different,” Popick explains. “For example, some prefer using their basement a lot, while others prefer to never spend time down there. We will go over all of that. I also want to know their thoughts on finishes.”
Popick notes that it’s not uncommon for a client to come to them with nothing more than thoughts scribbled on scraps of paper. An absolute professional, Popick uses the initial meeting and these notes to draw up a plan for the individual client. Adjustments are then made until both parties are happy with the end result.
At this point, the pieces begin to fall in place. From blueprints to budget, and from plumbing to paint colors, things are now steadily moving forward. Popick works with each individual budget, plan, and client preference to bring their home dreams to fruition.
“It’s a great day when you hand the keys over.”
Having built homes all over the southwest, Popick always feels pride and joy when looking at past projects, as well as the connections made with clients and their families.
“When you’re driving by these homes and you’re like, hey, we built that home, and those folks are still there enjoying their home, living, maybe raising a family, maybe retired. I forget about it sometimes, but then it’ll kind of clue in that we have our stamp on a lot of homes. It’s amazing.”
Popick has years of experience working alongside many tradespeople, typically working with the same handful of companies and individuals. He notes that the construction environment of his childhood taught him a lot and that the ever-changing and evolving nature of the business keeps him on his toes.
“My parents started the business many years ago, built it up, and pushed for that quality, that relationship with people. And I have been super fortunate to take that forward.”
As Chris and Amy kick off 2025 celebrating 10 years as Popick Homes Inc., they are proud of the work that has been accomplished and are excited to continue a legacy of quality, integrity, and care.
