The regular season for the Strathmore Spartans senior boys' rugby team begins in just a few weeks.
According to head coach Curtis Reid, the Spartans first league game is on April 16 at the field next to Strathmore High School.
"We started practicing a couple of times a week in the third week of February," Reid said. "Once the weather got nice enough, we got out on the field."
The team recently held their first exhibition game against Calgary club Father Lacombe.
"We played them last year in a tournament, and funny enough I play senior mens' with their head coach," added Reid. "It was a really good game, and we thought that our schools are very well matched."
Reid said the Spartans had a strong start to the exhibition season, winning their first game 17-10.
"This year I want to go for that gold and see these boys as provincial champions, and I think we have the team to do it."
Team captain Austyn Squire was also selected as MVP for the game against Father Lacombe.
