The Weyburn Police Service is reminding the community to ensure vehicles are locked with no valuables left inside. This after a reported theft last week, where tools and other items were stolen from a truck parked in the driveway of a residence in the city.

Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John explains these incidents can vary, with some people, even from outside the city, coming in to look for unlocked vehicles.

“Looking for unlocked vehicles, looking for change, looking for items that they could sell quickly. So you always need to be careful not to leave anything valuable in the public view and to make sure everything's locked up.”

Alongside keeping valuables out of sight and doors locked, he says there are other measures that can be taken to prevent and respond to theft attempts.

“Those floodlights or cameras can make a difference, just getting the vehicle that they're in, where we can get an identification.”

St. John notes the warmer temperatures can bring about these incidents; however, it's good that people are less likely to have their vehicles unlocked and running.
