As the season ends and all equipment has been removed, the Skating on the Crescent Committee is urging the public to stay off the ice on Crescent Lake. With rapidly changing weather conditions, the ice is becoming increasingly unstable and dangerous.
"At this time of year, we would never recommend going on the ice," the committee stated in a response to PortageOnline.
"The depth of the ice changes daily with fluctuating temperatures, and it’s difficult to determine which areas are safe."
The committee also clarified that throughout the season, ice depth checks are only conducted in the cleared areas where people are permitted to skate. They do not monitor ice conditions elsewhere on the lake.
With the ice melting quickly, they are strongly advising everyone to avoid stepping onto the lake. The risk of falling through the ice is high, and safety is paramount.
As the ice continues to deteriorate, it's essential to stay informed and respect the warnings to prevent any unfortunate incidents.
