Main Street in St. Adolphe

St. Adolphe's Main Street will be upgraded this summer.

According to a provincial spokesperson, Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is planning a project along Provincial Road (PR) 200 through St. Adolphe. The work will include asphalt resurfacing, catch basin replacement and minor curb rehabilitation.

Our province says the work will start at the PR 210 intersection and extend south along PR 200 for 1.8 kilometres.

According to the spokesperson, construction is expected to begin this summer and be completed this fall, weather permitting.

The estimated cost of the project is $3.7 million. The project is funded entirely by the Manitoba Government.

"We as Council, and I think the community as well, are going to be very excited to see a rehabilitated, revitalized Main Street in St. Adolphe," says Ritchot Mayor Chris Ewen.

Ewen says if you drive down that stretch of roadway you might think you are travelling in a developing country. He calls the state of the road "atrocious."

"(It has) been atrocious for a while," adds Ewen. "And we're very thankful that the province is coming in and doing what they need to do to make it 100 per cent again."

Ewen says these improvements have been needed for a long time. He notes when he first joined Council eight years ago, they were already then discussing the work that needed to be done. Ewen says with Ile des Chenes' Main Street being rebuilt last year and St. Adolphe's Main Street being targeted this year, it will be a huge weight off of Council's shoulders.

Meanwhile, Ewen acknowledges that a project like this will certainly create inconveniences. He notes construction projects do not always pan out as planned and says the work will also force motorists to take different routes.

"But it's all for the betterment of the municipality and the roads there," he says. "I just ask people to be kind and appreciate what's going to come after everything is done."
