Diverse Moms Connect is hosting a special event called Hoppy and Calm Easter on April 12 for families with neurodiverse children.
The organization is a support group for mothers, families and caregivers navigating neurodivergence. It was founded by Hillary Bierle and Elizabeth Lecerf, who connected over their shared experiences as mothers of neurodivergent sons. They saw the need for a space where parents could find support, understanding and information.. What began as a personal connection grew into a community aimed at helping others facing similar challenges.
Lecerf explained that the event runs from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 2890 Kingsview Boulevard Southeast #104 in Airdrie.
"The purpose for our event is to find an inclusive and sensory sensitive Easter outing and celebration for families and kids that experience diverse needs, it is something that we're really excited about continuing on after a really successful Christmas event where we had some modified activities an environment that is a little bit more sensitive to the needs of our families and kids."
She said the event will have a smaller crowd, lower noise levels and activities focused on sensory experiences.
"Traditional experiences like going to a community Easter egg hunt might not have been possible for them before, and something that they felt that they missed out on. Something that we experienced at our previous events is parents saying, how nice it is to have these typical family experiences, but in a way that includes their kids."
The event includes:
- Inclusive Easter egg hunt: A low-stress hunt with modifications for a calm experience.
- Animal encounters: Guests can meet and interact with baby joeys and sugar gliders from Cobbs Adventure Park in Calgary.
- Arts and crafts: Mess-free activities tailored to different sensory preferences.
- Relaxation zones: Quiet spaces for families to take breaks with calming activities.
- Interactive sensory stations: Hands-on experiences that engage through touch, sound and sight.
- Open play area: A space where children can explore activities such as building blocks and soft play structures in a sensory-friendly setting.
"We're excited that our group keeps growing and that we have new events to offer all the time. families are welcome to bring all their kids as well."
She concluded by saying how proud she is of how the group has grown so far and will continue to grow.
