A 57-year-old woman is dead after a late-night multi-vehicle collision on Stoney Trail N.W., and police say an unknown vehicle — believed to be a semi-truck and trailer combination — did not remain at the scene.
Officers responded at approximately 11:49 p.m. Tuesday to a collision in the southbound lanes of Stoney Trail, near the bridge deck at Nose Hill Drive N.W.
Police said a white 2019 Toyota Corolla, driven by a woman in her 50s, was travelling in a lane near the median when it was believed to have been struck by an unknown vehicle. Initial evidence at the scene suggests that the vehicle was likely a semi-truck and trailer combination. That vehicle did not remain.
Shortly afterward, a roadway maintenance truck with two occupants arrived and began providing medical aid to the woman.
Moments later, a black 2018 RAM truck — driven by a 21-year-old man with a 21-year-old passenger — struck a cable barrier in the median and subsequently made contact with the woman and the maintenance vehicle.
The woman was taken to hospital, where she was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.
Investigators said there is no evidence at this time to suggest speed, alcohol, or drugs were factors in the collision. The road was closed for several hours following the crash but has since re-opened.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dashcam footage is asked to contact police at 403-266-1234. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.
