A day after a late night April snow dump caused headaches for motorists across the region, Environment Canada has issued another snowfall warning for a portion of Rocky View County, though it does not encompass Airdrie.
The agency says 15 to 30 centimetres of snow is expected over southwestern Alberta by Thursday afternoon, with the heaviest accumulation in the foothills. Calgary could see up to five centimetres of wet snow. The warning includes areas near Bragg Creek and the Tsuu T’ina Nation, as well as communities across Foothills County — including Okotoks, High River, Diamond Valley, Cayley, Priddis and Longview — and parts of the Kananaskis Improvement District.
Light flurries were expected to intensify into heavy snowfall Wednesday night in areas near Nordegg, spreading south and west of Calgary into the overnight period. Snowfall is forecast to taper off Thursday morning along the foothills and by Thursday evening near the Canada-U.S. border, including Pincher Creek and Waterton.
Airdrie isn’t under a snowfall warning, but it won’t escape the weather entirely. Periods of snow are expected to begin Wednesday evening with local amounts between two and four centimetres. Temperatures will fall to –7 C overnight with wind chills near –14. Thursday will bring a high of 1 C with clearing skies by nightfall, followed by a low of –14 C and a wind chill dipping to –17.
Environment Canada warned that visibility may be reduced at times and advised drivers to prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions.
