A historic house in a Portage la Prairie museum has been selected as a finalist in the 2025 Next Great Save Competition.
The competition offers an opportunity to win $65,000 to help protect cherished heritage places.
The Hourie House, located in the Fort la Reine Museum, was listed as one of the many nominees.
Built in 1890 in High Bluff, Manitoba, the Hourie House was gifted by Hudson's Bay to Philip and Euphemia Hourie. In 1967, they were declared Manitoba's farm of the century, and in 1977, the house was moved to the Fort La Reine Museum, where it remains to this day.
The historic home needs a new foundation to ensure its stability before work on interior improvements can begin.
"The Fort la Reine Museum is an important tourist attraction for the City and RM of Portage la Prairie," said the Fort la Reine Museum. "Restoration to visitor favourites like the Hourie home helps to increase annual visitation, ensure safe visitor experiences, and expand our programs and educational outreach."
The winner of the competition will be chosen through an online vote. The Next Great Save runs until April 17.
