Calgary Police Service announced it will deploy photo radar enforcement throughout April in 18 neighbourhoods and active construction zones.

According to CPS, mobile photo radar units will focus on Albert Park/Radisson Heights, Bridlewood, Capitol Hill, Collingwood, Dover, Forest Lawn, Highland Park, Hillhurst, Marlborough, Panorama Hills, Rundle, Skyview Ranch, Sunalta, Taradale, Temple, Varsity, and Whitehorn.

CPS also operates 52 Intersection Safety Cameras (ISCs) citywide, which capture red-light infractions. Police emphasized that these cameras have significantly reduced collisions and improved overall intersectional safety.

Though the City of Airdrie was not among the 24 municipalities that previously operated photo radar programs, many local residents commute daily to Calgary and may be affected by the enforcement zones.

The CPS announcement coincides with provincial regulations that took effect April 1, following a year-long review by the Alberta government. These new rules:

  • Prohibit photo radar enforcement on provincial highways and connector roads.

  • Limit photo radar use strictly to schools, playgrounds, and active construction zones.

  • Restrict Intersection Safety Devices (ISDs) exclusively to red-light enforcement, removing their ability to issue speed-related fines.

Municipalities across Alberta had a transition period from December 2, 2024, until April 1, 2025, to ensure compliance and deactivate non-conforming photo radar sites.

Under these tightened guidelines, municipalities may still seek exemptions if a specific site shows a high frequency and severity of collisions compared to five similar locations. These exemption requests must include detailed, evidence-based business cases.

The province has mandated transparency through regular public audits and reporting on the effectiveness and outcomes of photo radar enforcement, reinforcing that traffic safety must be the exclusive focus of these programs.
