Bigger venue, same heartfelt mission
The highly anticipated South Central Cancer Resource (SCCR) Fashion Show is back, and this year, it’s bigger than ever. Following a sold-out event in 2024, where tickets were snapped up in under 15 minutes, organizers have moved the show to the spacious Meridian Exhibition Centre in Winkler to accommodate more attendees. Mark your calendars—tickets go on sale exclusively on SCCR’s website on April 8, 2025, at 9:00 AM.
A night of stories, strength, and style
The SCCR Fashion Show isn’t just about fashion; it’s about the incredible journeys of those impacted by cancer. Every model walking the runway has a personal connection to the disease—whether they are survivors, currently battling cancer, or supporting loved ones.
“This is my first year as a board member, but I’ve attended in the past, and it’s always the stories that move me the most,” says Eileen Vodden, SCCR board member. “It’s about more than the clothes—it’s about the people wearing them and the resilience they embody.”
The theme for this year’s show, ‘Stronger Together’, reflects the unity and support within the community. “We decided on the theme because of our move to Winkler and the way communities are coming together,” says Shania Ginter, SCCR board secretary. “We cover a large region, and this show is a testament to the strength we find in each other.”
A personal story: Shania Ginter’s mother’s journey
For Ginter, this year’s fashion show holds deep personal significance. Her mother, Nettie, was diagnosed with breast cancer when Shania was just 17 years old.
“I came home from school one day, and my mom sat me down and told me she found a lump,” recalls Ginter. “From that moment, life felt like it went into fast-forward.”
Her mother underwent a whirlwind of tests, a lumpectomy, six weeks of chemotherapy, and six weeks of radiation. The journey was grueling—not just physically, but emotionally.
“There were days when she could barely stay awake. We sanitized everything in the house to keep her from getting sick because her immune system was so weak,” says Ginter. “She had cravings from the steroids—peanut butter sandwiches and McDonald's cheeseburgers. We would do whatever it took to get them because it was something small that made her happy during a really difficult time.”
Now, seven years cancer-free, Nettie is a testament to resilience. “She’s seven years stronger, seven years braver. I just wish we had known about SCCR sooner,” says Ginter. “Having access to their resources—like transportation, wigs, emotional support—would have made such a difference.”
What SCCR offers and how you can support
SCCR provides essential services such as transportation to treatment, accommodations for patients needing to stay overnight in Winnipeg, a free wig and head-covering program, and financial assistance for those facing the high costs of cancer treatment.
“The transportation program alone is incredible,” says Vodden. “Radiation treatments can last just 15 minutes, but the travel time can be hours. SCCR helps relieve that burden.”
By attending the fashion show, guests will be directly supporting these vital programs. The event will feature delicious desserts, a rainbow auction, a wine bar, and, of course, an unforgettable runway show.
