Portage la Prairie found a spot in the World Atlas article as one of the nine most welcoming communities on the prairies. Local leaders, including Mayor Sharilyn Knox, MLA Jeff Bereza, and Portage Regional Economic Development Executive Director Eve O’Leary, celebrated the accolade, citing the city’s spirit and appeal to visitors and businesses looking to come here.

Pride in local identity

Mayor Knox highlights the practical benefits of the recognition. “We know it definitely helps when newcomers or visitors Google our community and see positive stories,” she says. The mayor emphasizes Portage’s reputation for friendliness, noting that residents frequently assist tourists with directions or recommendations.

Bereza, a lifelong resident, echoes her enthusiasm.

“It’s an honour to be here with Mayor Knox today, recognizing the amazing city we have—the collaboration, the vision. Come see what we’re bragging about!”

The pair also point to local landmarks like Island Park and the iconic Coke Can as draws for visitors, including recent tourists from New York.

Economic and tourism boosts

O’Leary underscores the economic implications of the World Atlas feature.

“This affirmation boosts tourism and positions us for future investment opportunities, ensuring a bright future for Portage la Prairie.”

Knox urges residents to sustain the city’s welcoming atmosphere. “Continue being friendly, inviting guests, and supporting local businesses,” she adds. “Working together helps our region prosper.”

Bereza, reflecting on 61 years in Portage, calls the community “a little extra special” within Friendly Manitoba. “From Island Park’s beauty to our tight-knit spirit,” he notes, “this will always be home.”
