The Moose Jaw Community Choir (MJCC), consisting of nearly 80 members from in and around the city brought together by their love of singing, have announced their Fourth Annual Spring Sing concert will be at Zion United Church on Saturday, May 10, starting at 7 p.m.

The choir has been practicing for two hours every Monday night for months to prepare for the concert, and base Bob Laing said it’s going to be a great show.

“I think it will be quite nice, there’s a whole lot of different songs, and it ranges from doo-wop from the ‘50s to show tunes, to a really upbeat number in Latin. So, it’s a good mix of songs.

Jubilate Deo (is the name of the Latin song), and it moves along quite nicely, it’s got a good melody, so we really enjoy that.”

The MJCC began in February 2017, when a group of about 9 people decided there should be an opportunity for people in Moose Jaw to sing for fun. The group eventually decided they would sing 4-part harmony in a variety of styles: sacred, folk song, pop, classical, Broadway, Christmas, and more.

Their director is Diane Rhodes and their piano accompanist is Jennifer Watterson. To begin, there were 38 people in the choir. At this point, Laing said they have 85 folders, and nearly all the people needed to use them.

“Not everybody attends each practice, but we have a lot of people,” he explained. “Everybody is quite enthusiastic. One of the songs we’re singing is by one of our choir members — she wrote the words and the music — and we will be kind of featuring it.

“I think anybody who comes out will enjoy the music, they’ll see us having a fun time together and the joy with which we sing these songs.”

Tickets will NOT be sold at the door, so if you’re interested in attending, don’t wait. You can get them from Temple Gardens Centre box office, or online at Sasktix.ca.

Children 12 and under will be free with an accompanying adult ticket (ticket for the child is not required) and there will be a reception to follow with refreshments and treats.

“We encourage people to hang around afterwards,” Laing invited. “I think we’ve got some goodies and stuff down in the basement of Zion United, and they can mix with the choir and talk with us, and we love that part, as well.”
