April marks Autism Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the unique strengths and challenges of individuals with autism. Austin Hunter, a grade 7 student at La Verendrye School and Manitoba's first-ever Autism Ambassador, took time to share his personal journey and insights into the importance of understanding and acceptance for those with autism.
Austin, who is deeply passionate about educating others, says that autism simply means learn a bit differently.
"Autism means you think a bit different, and you might add different. We are still smart, and we could still get the job done. We are awesome."
He hopes that people will treat those with autism just like anyone else and, most importantly, with kindness and respect.
"I want people to learn about autism. I want people to treat us like you. Be kind, don't bully. We have feelings too."
Austin’s little brother, Jace Hunter, plays an important role in his life as a “safe person,” providing support and love. Together, they share a close bond, with Jace proudly supporting Austin's advocacy work. Austin’s commitment to supporting others extends beyond his immediate family. He often mentors younger children with autism, offering them guidance and encouragement.
Tara-Marie Hall, Austin's mom, highlighted his growth over the years, praising his dedication to teaching others about autism. She also mentioned an exciting new initiative in the works: a swimming program for children with special needs, set to launch in the summer. The program will offer a unique opportunity for kids to engage in physical activity in a supportive environment.
As Austin celebrates Autism Awareness Month, his message is clear: embracing differences and promoting kindness makes everyone stronger.
