Students at Killarney's Christian School are taking to the stage later this month to bring new life to a favorite swashbuckling adventure comedy filmed in 1987, The Princess Bride.

Drama teacher, Dan Friesen, says their rendition is titled, The Princess Cried, showcasing the strife between two communities, set in the days of yore, and all the fun that comes with that!

"I've taught drama here for three years, and this is our third year," shares Friesen. "Building on the foundational skills we've learned about stage presence, voice projection, and our experiences with Christmas pageants, we decided to plunge into the deep end and rewrite The Princess Bride. We've added some local touches, such as Killarney versus Ninette and instead of the Gilder conflict, and dread Phys-Ed teacher instead of a dread pirate robber."

The Princess Cried was written together as a drama class to which Friesen edited the script to make it stage ready.

"Our students, aged 10 and 12, are playing the roles in our show," he adds. "We've kept the swordplay and included funny rhyming bits. We're having lots of fun with it and looking forward to performing it. It's been a lot of fun, and it's a fairly small class with 11 students."

"It's been great for bonding, especially since many of these students have been together for the past two years," explains Friesen. "We've been able to work together on this project and even write our own pieces.  And some of the characters reflect the students' personalities. It's been a creative and enjoyable experience!"
