The Portage Stampeders Special Olympics team had an amazing performance at the indoor track and field event held last weekend in Winnipeg, with all six athletes competing earning ribbons and qualifying for the upcoming provincial Summer Games in June.
"It was a great weekend," said Deanna Talbot, the head coach of the team.
"We had six athletes compete in a variety of events, including shot put, the 60-meter run, the 200-meter run, and the long jump. Every athlete walked away with a ribbon, so it was a fantastic experience."
The event, which also served as a qualifying round for the provincial games, gave athletes the chance to meet others from different communities and get back into the competitive spirit. Talbot expressed the excitement within the team as they prepare for the June games.
"We've been on a bit of a break, so this event was the perfect kickoff. The athletes are thrilled to be back, meeting new people, and preparing for the summer games."
Among the standouts was Dylan Wilson, who impressed with his dedication and hard work.
"Dylan is a very quiet athlete, but he's incredibly hard-working. His favourite event was shot put, and he loves competing. He doesn't say much during practice, but you can tell he really enjoys the experience when talking to his parents afterward."

Katie Niles, a first-time competitor in track and field, had an emotional and rewarding day.
"Katie was a little nervous at first, but her teammates really supported her. By the end of the day, she was smiling and having fun, running around the track even when she didn't need to."
Another highlight was Caleb Reykdal, who captured the crowd's attention with his enthusiastic spirit.
“Caleb's a bit of a star. He loves to get the crowd involved, blowing kisses and raising his hands to get them cheering him on. He has a smile on his face all the time and really gives it his all."
The team's veterans, including Sarah Holmes, Stephanie Holmes, and Paula Jordan, also competed with energy and determination.
"They know what these events are all about. They have lots of friends from other communities and are especially excited for the provincial games, as they've participated before and know exactly what to expect."

With their hard work and enthusiasm, the Portage Stampeder's team is set for a thrilling summer ahead as they prepare for the provincial Summer Games in Winnipeg.
