Downtown Winnipeg will soon be transformed into a sea of white.
The province announced Tuesday that the Winnipeg Jets Whiteout Street Parties will return and the Manitoba government will provide funding to help fans celebrate.
"Our government is excited to help bring the Jets whiteout parties to downtown Winnipeg for what we hope is a lengthy playoff run,” said Premier Wab Kinew. "Not only do whiteout parties benefit downtown businesses and raise money for housing and mental health supports, they’re a fantastic way to come together as a community. Whiteout parties are a great, affordable way to experience the atmosphere of playoff hockey."
The Manitoba government will contribute up to $300,000 toward the festivities, with parties taking place before and during every Jets home playoff game.
"Winnipeg has the best fans in the NHL and we can’t wait to see downtown buzzing with energy," said Sport, Culture, Heritage and Tourism Minister Nellie Kennedy. "By partnering with True North Sports + Entertainment, we’re helping to create safe events downtown that allow neighbours to connect, support local businesses and create lasting memories as we support our Winnipeg Jets."
The parties will be held on Donald Street between Portage Avenue and Graham Avenue outside Canada Life Centre. Party gates will open two hours before puck drop, giving fans a fun, entertaining and safe community destination to cheer on the Winnipeg Jets as they chase the Stanley Cup.
Tickets will be priced at $10, with 50 per cent of proceeds being donated to the United Way to support initiatives tackling chronic homelessness and expanding mental health and addictions resources.
The Winnipeg Whiteout Street Parties first took place in 2018. Since then, they have attracted more than 170,000 fans.
