Winnipeg Jets prospect and first-round draft choice of the Winnipeg Jets in 2021 is retiring at just 21 years old.
Chaz Lucius announced on Tuesday, saying he was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a hereditary disorder that affects the connective tissue that stabilizes and supports the joints and organs throughout the body.
"As I struggled with incurring and recovering from various joint injuries over the past several years, I had thought I was just unlucky," said Chaz in a statement. "With the diagnosis of EDS, I now realize that my body, impacted by EDS, could not handle the physical nature of playing hockey."
Considering the diagnosis and his injury history, Chaz was medically advised not to continue to play.
He says he has been fortunate to have incredible support from his family, friends and the Winnipeg Jets organization through his short career.
"I feel blessed to have experienced all that hockey gave me over the years, even though I am crushed that I cannot continue to pursue my dream of playing in the NHL," said Chaz
Lucius has spent the past few seasons playing for the Manitoba Moose. Lucius scored three goals and had six assists in the 2024-25 season.
He says he looks forward to the journey ahead and being an advocate for those suffering from EDS.
