Grizzly bear 122 — a large male known locally as "The Boss" — was spotted in the Lower Bow Valley on April 7, according to multiple media reports citing Parks Canada.
Grizzly 122 is considered one of Banff’s most famous grizzlies, frequently spotted roaming large stretches of the Bow Valley. The sighting came just ahead of a public advisory from Parks Canada, which posted on social media on Tuesday that bears are "awake and active" in the park and that activity is expected to increase as spring returns.
"To ensure the safety of wildlife and the public during this sensitive time of increased activity, area closures may be implemented as needed,” the post read. “It is important to respect closures and area restrictions — they are in place for your safety and to give bears a chance to use habitat undisturbed."
Parks Canada used the opportunity to issue a reminder about safety in bear country, advising visitors to carry accessible bear spray and know how to use it, make noise while hiking, and travel in tight groups of four or more. Children should be kept close, and dogs must be leashed at all times or left at home.
"Tracks, droppings, diggings, torn-up logs and turned-over rocks are all signs that a bear has been in the area," the post said. "Leave the area if the signs are fresh."
The agency also advised hikers to stay on official trails, travel during daylight hours, and report any large dead animals to staff. Sightings of bears or other large carnivores, including wolves and cougars, can be reported to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470.
