The province is investing millions of dollars in a downtown fitness facility.

Premier Wab Kinew announced Tuesday that they will spend $5 million to support the Downtown YMCA-YWCA.

"The Downtown Y is an important hub for downtown Winnipeg, serving families for more than 100 years," said Kinew. "Our government is proud to support this campaign to help them offer the recreation opportunities, youth and community programs, and child care that help keep our downtown vibrant for years to come."

The YMCA-YWCA is running a campaign hoping to raise $18 million, with the provincial funding will go a long way to help them reach their goal.

The funds will go towards revitalizing and redeveloping the Downton Y to include new child-care spaces, additional classrooms for mental health and newcomer programs and areas for community engagement and recreation, including a new indoor splash pad.

The Downton Y has been a part of the heart of Winnipeg for 112 years.
