If a lack of truck or trailer is keeping you from getting rid of large items from your home, the Town of Altona wants to help.
Starting May 1st, you'll be able to schedule a date and time for Public Works to come get those items that can't be taken during regular curbside collection and dispose of them at the waste diversion loop or landfill. It's all part of the Town's new, year-round Bulky Waste Pick-Up Service.
"(It) stems off of Clean -Up Week, which has changed a few times over the last numbers of years," explained Mayor Harv Schroeder. Now, residents can drop off large, unwanted items at the local landfill free of charge during that week, Schroeder says some residents were missing out because they were unable to get their items there.
"We thought this was an opportunity to help out community members who don't have access to trucks or trailers but need to get rid of products from their apartments or houses," he noted.

How does it work?
Through the new service, residents can schedule a pick-up by purchasing tags, available for $30 each, at the town office, located in the Altona Civic Centre. That fee will cover the labour, equipment, and disposal costs associated with the collection and removal of the items. Up to 10 items can be collected per address during a single visit. Each item must be individually tagged and will be collected using specialized equipment including a loader with forks and dump truck.
What can be picked up?
Eligible items include:
Household furniture, such as sofas, chairs, tables, etc.
Household appliances, such as refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, etc.
Mattresses or Box Springs: must be wrapped in plastic for safe handling and disposal
Tires: with or without wheels
Barbecues
Branches: must be under 3 metres in length and bundled for easy access by the loader using forks. Each bundle must be no larger than 1 metre x 1 metre by 3 metres for easy and safe lifting.
Other: other items that are not specifically listed and are not listed as ineligible.
What won't be picked up?
Ineligible items are:
Items collected through the regular curbside waste collection, including recyclable items such as metals, plastics, e-waste, etc., or Regular yard waste (aside from large branches)
Renovation waste: Any items resulting from construction or renovation activities (e.g., drywall, construction debris, flooring, etc.)
Hazardous Materials & Used Oil: Paint, chemicals, fluorescent light bulbs, used oil, filters and coolant, etc. These can be disposed of at the Altona/Rhineland Waste Disposal Site free of charge.
Items without stickers: each item for collection must be visibly tagged with the Bulky Waste Pick-Up sticker
Items that can be diverted from the landfill, such as appliances, mattresses and tires, will be appropriately disposed of through the waste diversion loop, also located at the landfill.
