The Herman Prior Activity Centre’s Men’s Coffee Crew — a group of retirees who meet weekday mornings — transitions to the Portage Golf Club starting Monday for its summer season.
Regular Ray Wiebe reflects on the group’s dynamic as they navigate lighthearted banter and global anxieties.
Winter routines, summer shifts
The crew of roughly 20 has gathered at the centre since fall, enjoying breakfasts and casual debates. Wiebe credits volunteers for fostering a welcoming space:
“They treat us royally here. As you maybe saw the meal they served us this morning, the breakfast, it was outstanding.”
“Uncertainty right now in the country”
Wiebe says discussions often balance sports trivia with geopolitical concerns.
“Politics unfortunately, gets into it, especially the US side of it. Some days, it’s better likely if we don’t even talk about that,” he notes.
Tariffs, stock markets, and “reminiscing about the past” dominate tableside chatter.

“The world’s going crazier”
Fellow regular Gary Sloik says U.S. politics frequently surfaces.
“The general consensus is that the world’s going crazier,” he adds.
Members report Americans apologizing for political tensions, with debates often circling misinformation.
“So much of it is not facts. It’s made-up,” Sloik continues.
Legacy of laughter and loyalty
Despite divisive topics, Wiebe stresses camaraderie prevails.
“It’s just a good outing every morning. Everybody has a good time.”
The group plans to continue its 30-year tradition at the golf club, where non-golfers like Wiebe still savor coffee and shared memories.
“As long as those of us around this table are here,” he says, “it’ll still be Canada.”
