It's something Altona Police Chief Dan Defer says his department deals with every election.

On Thursday, the office received a report of two election signs being damaged, rather, noted Defer, they were driven over.

"There are those individuals out there that tend to go out and either remove or destroy election signs," he explained.

Defer noted, destroying, tampering or damaging election signs is an offence under the Federal Elections Act and says these incidents will be investigated by police.

Democracy demands respect

Following Thursday's reports, he offered this plea to the public

"Everybody has their different views, their different beliefs, their different political affiliations and, part of the benefits of living in a country that we do, is the right to have those differences. We're just asking everyone to respect everyone else's views and their opinions and not go out and damage property of a different or opposing viewpoint."

In a news release, the Altona Police Service said while our democratic society allows for people to freely express their beliefs, it does not permit intolerance toward them.
