Airdrie's weather is set to swing sharply in the days ahead, with sunshine, frost, gusting winds and a chance of flurries — all before the Easter long weekend begins.

As of Friday morning, Environment Canada says today will bring clear skies, a high of 13 C and west winds gusting to 60 km/h. Overnight temperatures are forecast to fall to –7 C, with wind chill values around –10.

Saturday’s forecast includes increasing cloud, a risk of rain showers or flurries, and winds shifting from the north at up to 50 km/h. Environment Canada is calling for localized snowfall of up to five centimetres along the foothills, though no accumulation is expected across most of the region. The high is forecast at 4 C, with another sub-zero night expected at -9 C.

Sunday and Monday are expected to remain dry, with daytime highs of 8 C and 15 C. Tuesday will bring a mix of sun and cloud, followed by a 60 per cent chance of flurries or rain Tuesday night. Highs are expected to remain above seasonal averages through mid-week.

Easter Sunday falls on April 20. While Environment Canada has not issued a formal forecast for the long weekend, two long-range outlooks point to continued instability in western Canada.

The Farmers’ Almanac is predicting "wet Easter Sunday with showers" for Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It also warns of thunderstorms developing over Alberta between April 24 and 27.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac offers a slightly different take, forecasting warmer-than-normal temperatures and above-average precipitation across the west for April and May.
