Right amount, wrong account — scammer changes employee's direct deposit information

Winkler Police are investigating a case of payroll fraud after an employee’s work email was hacked and used to redirect their direct deposit to a different bank account. 

“So, we received notice from the business notifying us that an employee’s work email had been hacked,” said Police Chief Ryan Hunt. “Whoever hacked into it used it to send an email… asking for that employee's automatic payroll deposit to be changed. They didn’t know anything was wrong until the employee asked why he had not got paid.” 

The incident was reported on April 4, and the investigation is ongoing.
