The Winkler Pickleball Club has come a long way since its early days — and as founder John Klassen steps away, a new chapter is underway.

A founding figure steps down

“John has been a huge part of this club from the beginning,” says incoming board chair Darren Crane. “He helped lay the foundation and guide it to where it is today.”

Klassen, who helped launch the club in 2017, saw the sport grow from a group of just 20 players to more than 300 active members today. Known for his steady leadership and friendly court-side presence, Klassen was instrumental in securing playing space, organizing events, and building a welcoming community feel.

“His passion and vision really helped the club take shape,” Crane says. “It’s hard to overstate how much time and energy John poured into this.”

A growing community

The Winkler Pickleball Club now offers year-round play, indoors at Parkland School and Pineridge Elementary, and outdoors in summer months. The sport continues to grow in popularity, with players ranging in age from 14 to 84.

“Whether you’re competitive or just want some fun exercise, it’s a sport that fits almost everyone,” Crane says. “And the community we’ve built is really special.”

Looking ahead

Crane says Klassen’s shoes won’t be easy to fill — but the club is in a great place to keep the momentum going.

“We’re thankful for everything John has done, and he’s still around playing with us,” Crane adds. “He’s just passed the torch on the organizing side.”

New executive members have stepped up to help lead the club into the future, and Crane says they’re excited to welcome new players all the time.

“Come on out and give it a try,” he says. “Pickleball is easy to learn, great for fitness, and honestly — it’s just a lot of fun.”
