The Legacy Choir is comprised of 35 to 40 singers from Grades 4 to 6 at Legacy Park Elementary School. They'll be performing a joint concert with the Rise Choir from Weyburn Comprehensive School in the LPES gymnasium on May 5th at 7 p.m.
"Music Monday is something that's put on the first Monday of May every year by the Coalition of Music Education Canada. As a music teacher, I have celebrated it at school with our school community, and this year we've decided to have an evening concert so that not just the students and teachers at school celebrate music Monday, but our community can join us as well," shared Music Teacher Holly Butz, who directs both choir groups.
This year's song choice for choirs across Canada is Triumph's 'Hold On'. The two choirs will perform the song together, as well as other songs in each choir's repertoire.
Butz said the Legacy Choir is itching to perform a concert. She's been working with them since January, and the group even won an award at the Rotary Club of Weyburn's Music Festival last month.
"So we jumped on board with the Music Monday idea, and then they're having fun with getting their songs ready for the concert as well as learning that Triumph song, 'Hold On', so that they can sing that with the Rise choir too."
The Rise Choir has 23 students from Grades 10 to 12.
"I've been working with them since September, so they've had a very, very full year, a lot of repertoire and a lot of performances, and they were actually selected to perform at the stars of the festival and had a very successful season so far."
Admission for Music Monday will be by donation for anyone who wants to attend.
