The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has launched an investigation after Winnipeg police officers opened fire on a stolen pickup truck Friday evening.
Just before 6 p.m. on Friday, officers noticed a stolen vehicle being driven down Home Street, between Portage Avenue and St. Matthews Avenue.
To stop the truck, officers placed one of their cruisers in the middle of Home Street between St. Matthews and Ellice Avenues.
When the stolen truck reached the barricade, it reversed, hitting a vehicle behind it. The driver then drove towards the officers who were standing outside of their cruiser, leading officers to shoot at the stolen vehicle.
The truck fled, driving over the boulevard, hitting a cruiser car and eventually colliding with a home at the corner of Home Street and Ellice Avenue.
The crash resulted in a fire which spread to a large fuel tank located in the bed of the pick-up truck, which exploded, igniting the house and the truck on fire.
The 48-year-old male driver and his 29-year-old female passenger fled on foot. They were located and arrested a short time later.
No injuries were reported as a result of this incident
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU)was notified of the incident and has since taken over the investigation.
