The Government of Saskatchewan is reporting success in their commitment to procurement from Saskatchewan based companies, stating that, in the past five years, nearly 90 per cent of procurements were awarded to Saskatchewan companies. The Sask. Government notes that over that same five-year period, less than one per cent of all procurements have been awarded to US companies, and that 99 per cent have gone to Canadian companies overall.
For SaskBuilds' and their major projects, the majority of contractors were from Saskatchewan, and all were Canadian.
"Our government will always put Saskatchewan people and Saskatchewan companies first," SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister David Marit said in an official statement.
"With the vast majority of our procurement going to local businesses, we will continue to support local contractors and industries during this turbulent time."
The province also highlighted the Ministry of Highways' utilization of local companies for their projects, stating that, in the 2024-25 construction year, 96 per cent of the value of awarded contracts stayed in the province.
Similarly, Saskatchewan's Crown Corporations awarded 75 per cent - or $1.2 billion - of their procurements to Saskatchewan suppliers in the first three quarters of 2024-25, with approximately three per cent coming from the United States.
Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan has $43 million worth of VLTs and slot machines set to be purchased over the 2025-26 year, and they too are committing acquiring them from non-US sources. Currently, 720 VLTs have been ordered through a Canadian subsidiary of a multi-national company with the machines assembled in Mexico using Canadian, Mexican, and Asian components.
The Sask. Government says that they are continuing their commitment to support Saskatchewan workers and businesses, and that is reflected through their accelerated procurement of 10,000 tons of steel from EVRAZ over the coming months.
