A champion for diversity honoured

The Morden Area Foundation has officially announced Shelley Voth as the 2024 Citizen of Distinction—a recognition that shines a spotlight on residents who make Morden a better place to live through both professional contributions and volunteer efforts.

The honour will be celebrated at a public ceremony on Sunday, May 25th at 2:00 p.m. at the Morden Legion Hall, with doors opening at 1:30 p.m.

A legacy of service and inclusion

The Citizen of Distinction award has been a cornerstone of community recognition in Morden for decades. Originally called Volunteer of the Year, the award has evolved to recognize broader contributions, including work within one’s profession.

“This award has been happening for over 45 years,” said Lenore Laverty with the Morden Area Foundation. “It’s incredible to think that someone’s dad or grandpa may have been the first recipient—it’s a true legacy.”

Laverty explained how the award has adapted over time to reflect the many ways individuals can impact their community.

“Several years ago, the criteria expanded,” she shared. “We moved from recognizing just volunteer work to also acknowledging professional contributions—and Shelley exemplifies that beautifully.”

A lifeline for newcomers

Shelley Voth’s role as the Immigration Coordinator for the City of Morden has been nothing short of transformative. Her efforts in welcoming newcomers, fostering diversity, and building a stronger, more inclusive community have left a lasting mark.

“Shelley is that person who blends both her professional role and her volunteer efforts seamlessly,” said Laverty. “She’s been a critical part of our community’s development and diversity. It’s not just what she does in her job—it’s who she is in the community.”

Whether organizing events, supporting families adjusting to life in Morden, or simply being a welcoming face, Voth’s passion for people and her community is evident in all she does.

Celebration open to all

The public is invited to attend the May 25th ceremony to help celebrate this well-deserved recognition.

“What we love about this event is that while the Citizen of Distinction gives us a list of special guests they’d like to invite, the celebration is open to everyone,” Laverty added. “So come out, show your support, and help us honour Shelley for everything she’s done—and continues to do—for Morden.”
