Youth between the ages of 5 and 11 will be able to get their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine tomorrow in northwestern Ontario.

The Northwestern Health Unit says vaccination clinics for 5 to 11-year-old children will begin on November 27, and anyone born in 2016 or earlier is now eligible.

During her weekly conference with regional media members, Medical Officer of Health with the Northwestern Health Unit, Dr. Kit Young Hoon, explained why vaccinating youth as soon as possible is so important.

“85 to 90 per cent vaccination rates are required for herd immunity, for the entire population. At this point, we can’t achieve herd immunity until 5 to 11-year-olds are included in that eligibility group,” explained Young Hoon.

“Now that they’re included, and hopefully with a strong vaccination rate, we’re more likely to achieve more herd immunity. The vaccination program for this age group is key for any region.”

Young Hoon notes the NWHU will not be holding school-based clinics for this age group, and school staff cannot provide consent for a youth to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at this time.

Parents of children ages 5-11 will have to provide consent for their child to get the vaccine prior to booking, or at the appointment.

As well, Young Hoon explains the COVID-19 vaccine cannot be administered within the same two-week window as any other vaccine for youth.

“Children should not receive a different vaccine at least 14 days before or after getting the COVID-19 vaccine. This includes the influenza vaccine. Parents who have got their children vaccinated against influenza should book an appointment at least 14 days after the influenza shot.”

Pediatric data on kids between five and 11 from early October showed a safe and strong immune response from two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, which are one-third the size given to teens and adults.

Canada is expecting an accelerated delivery of 2.9 million child-sized doses, enough for a first dose for every child in the five to 11 age group.
