The results are in, and 68% of the people who responded to the Town of Altona's Big Easel Restoration survey believe the towering steel structure should remain a landmark in the community.

46% of those believe it is very important the towering steel structure should remain a landmark in the community, and 22% feel it is somewhat important. 

Additionally, 60% of respondents went on to say that the big easel should continue to display some kind of hand-painted artwork. 
    
Finally, 61% of respondents feel that whatever is displayed should continue to be an image of Van Gogh's Sunflowers.

Council posed the series of questions to the community after the giant painting was taken down last month after being declared unsafe following years of wear and tear, combined with recent high wind events resulting in heavy damage that would be costly to repair.

The survey concluded by asking residents how they felt any next steps should be paid for. 56% felt it should be covered by a combination of community fund raisers and through the municipal budget.

Officials will meet with the original artist and the insurance adjuster later this month, and Council plans to further discuss next steps at its strategic plan review session on May 1st after which, a plan will be shared with the community.

In total, 589 responses to the survey were submitted, equivalent to 13.4% of Altona's population.
