Winkler native David Schaeffer is officially a published children's author. After a lifelong passion for storytelling and a creative spark fueled by a family birthday gift idea, David's first children's book, Rosalba Raccoon and Other Stories, is now available — and he's celebrating with a book launch on May 3rd at the Winkler Library.
"I've loved reading for a long, long time," David shares. "But it was the fall of 2023 when I needed to come up with a birthday present for my young nephew, and I thought, 'OK, this is the time.'"
A book born from family and imagination
Rather than picking a book off the shelf, David decided to craft his very own story — a move that led to three charming tales packed into one whimsical book. His love for fantasy and adventure shines through, with inspiration pulled from favorites like Frog and Toad, Dragons of Autumn Twilight, and Lord of the Isles.
"When you've got a vivid imagination, you can be wonderfully creative," David says. "There's so much to explore."
Rosalba Raccoon and Other Stories introduces readers to a mischievous raccoon named Rosalba, a barnyard terror named Terrible Tom Turkey, and a curious cloud who journeys down to the earth for the first time.
"They aren't just polished, perfect sunshine stories," David explains. "I don't like the idea of talking down to children. I want to present something they can enjoy and learn from."
Not your typical children's book
David didn’t just stop at writing — he illustrated every page himself, bringing a unique visual style inspired by his love for artists like Tim Burton and the cozy fantasy world of Redwall.
His art has an edgier, more textured feel compared to traditional children's books, but that's intentional.
"I want kids to be curious," David says. "To look at something they don't know and try to figure it out. And honestly, adults are going to be reading it over and over too — they should enjoy it as well!"
The language and rhymes in Rosalba Raccoon and Other Stories reflect that philosophy. It's playful yet thoughtful — familiar enough to enjoy aloud, but rich enough for deeper conversations after the story ends.
Book launch set for May 3rd at Winkler Library
Fans young and old can meet David Schaeffer in person at his official book launch event happening Friday, May 3rd at the Winkler Library. Activities kick off at 10 a.m., including a live reading, book signings, and a scavenger hunt for kids.
If you can't make it in the morning, David is hosting an afternoon session too.
"I'm going to have hundreds of books there," David shares. "There’s going to be signing, reading, even a scavenger hunt. Anyone who can't make it in the morning, we'll do it again in the afternoon."
The Winkler Library — already known for its creative events — is the perfect backdrop for this special occasion. David, a self-proclaimed library enthusiast, is thrilled to celebrate his launch in a place that inspired much of his own love of reading.
