Spring is officially here, and Many Hands Resource Centre in Morden is celebrating by launching its Community Garden program — now at a new location on 1st Street, north of the the baseball fields.

Mariyam Tsygankova from Many Hands shared her excitement about the project, emphasizing the garden’s many benefits for individuals, families, and the community as a whole.

Gardening for Health, Community, and Sustainability

"For me, gardening is about taking care of my mental health," Tsygankova explained. "I go to the garden to be soothed, to be healed, and have all my senses put together — and, of course, it feeds me too."

The Morden Community Garden offers residents a chance to grow their own fresh produce, especially important as grocery prices continue to climb. "Growing your own food helps reduce food costs and increases access to healthy produce," Tsygankova said.

Beyond the practical benefits, she also stressed how gardening strengthens community ties: "You meet your neighbors, share your knowledge, and build a sense of belonging. It’s not just about food — it’s about connection."

New Location and Exciting Growth Plans

This year, the Community Garden has moved to a new location on 1st Street, near the ball diamonds. The garden offers about 150 plots, with room to expand if interest grows.

"Whether you're a seasoned gardener or brand new, everyone is welcome," Tsygankova said. "And if we see more people interested, we’ll look at adding extra plots."

To introduce the new space, Many Hands is hosting a Community Garden Information Night on Thursday, April 24 from 7:00–9:00 PM. Attendees can learn more about what’s planned for the season, register for a garden plot, and even win a door prize filled with gardening goodies.

Affordable Gardening Opportunities

Plots are available for just $30 each, and Food Bank clients can access them for only $15, making it an affordable way for everyone to grow their own food.

Tsygankova encourages anyone interested to join. "It’s not only about growing vegetables," she said. "It's about learning valuable skills, being responsible, and becoming more self-sufficient."

The City of Morden is partnering with Many Hands on this project, providing tilled soil, compost bins, and water tanks. Gardeners only need to bring their own tools and watering cans.

How to Get Involved
