Weyburn residents are in for a wet start to the week, with a low-pressure system tracking just south of the border bringing rain—and possibly snow—to the region.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Shannon Moodie, the system will begin to affect the Weyburn area Monday night, following a mild and breezy day.

“We’re looking at rain, about five to ten millimetres, that could become mixed with some snow overnight and into Tuesday morning,” Moodie explained. “That rain is going to continue through Tuesday, and then you’ll see it taper off through the day.”

Temperatures are expected to dip noticeably Tuesday night into Wednesday morning before rebounding for the latter half of the week. The forecast calls for a return to milder conditions and a sunny weekend.

So far in April, Weyburn has recorded 13 millimetres of precipitation, with most of it falling as rain. Unlike some other parts of the province, Weyburn has largely avoided snow. However, areas to the north—including Moosomin and Yorkton—could see substantial snowfall from this system.

Moodie cautioned those with travel plans to stay informed. “Certainly, in through just north of the Weyburn area… could get a pretty substantial amount of snow. So if anyone has any travel plans, just make sure they’re keeping an eye on any alerts that are going to be issued.”

The mixed precipitation is due to fluctuating temperatures as the system passes through. “As the temperature cools, you’re going to see that rain transition to snow,” Moodie said.

The timing of the rainfall comes just ahead of spring seeding for many local producers. While a bit of moisture is welcome, especially in dry regions, the combination of cold and wet may delay fieldwork in the short term.

For now, residents are advised to stay alert to changing conditions. You can find the latest forecast on the Discover Weyburn Weather page, and the latest highway conditions on the Discover Weyburn Road Report.
