The Kindersley Wildlife Federation’s annual banquet nearly sold out this year and surpassed its fundraising goals, according to Federation President Richard Bluett.
The banquet saw 142 tickets of 145 sold and was catered by Jackie’s Delicious Delights. “We did very good there,” Richard said. “As always, our special raffles, big ticket items like the firearms and the Traeger pellet grill with the meat package courtesy of Kindersley Packers, did really well.”
Though the number of awards was lower due to a drop in animal population and fewer hunting opportunities, the event still drew strong support from sponsors and community members.
Planning for next year’s banquet is expected to start shortly after harvest season, but efforts to improve the event happen year-round. “We’re always looking at what worked, what didn’t, and how to make it better,” Richard added. “And we’re always looking for help, more members, more volunteers.”
When it comes to events throughout the summer, Richard told us about the Federation hosting a Family Range Day on May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., open to both members and non-members. Attendees can try shooting rifles, pistols, shotguns, and archery under supervision, with no prior licensing required. A $5 burger and hotdog barbecue will also be held, courtesy of local sponsors.
“If you’ve ever wanted to see what we do or try out some shooting in a safe environment, this is your chance,” Richard said.
A Hunter Safety Education Course will run from May 26 to June 5, led by Ray and Mel Varty. Registration costs $70, with a deadline of May 12, and participants must be at least 12 years old. The course is a first step toward obtaining a firearms license.
Meanwhile, the Kindersley Clay Busters will begin weekly trap shoot starting on April 30, meeting Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. Anyone is welcome to attend or join the team. A registered trap shoot, which counts toward provincial standings, will take place July 25 to 27 at the Kindersley Wildlife Federation grounds.
“Our registered shoot actually has the most shooters outside of provincials,” Richard said. “We’re always looking for volunteers for that, (to help with) scoring, reloading, trap machines.”
The Kindersley Archery Club will also be starting in May, with archery sessions planned for Thursday evenings at 6:30 and Saturday afternoons. Equipment will be available for beginners.
Finally, Richard encouraged anyone interested in booking a private trap shooting event, whether a company gathering, social, or family party, to contact Dan Kaczmarski to set up a session.
