"Extremely icy road conditions. There are multiple collisions throughout the city on main roads including Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail," CPS said in a social media statement early Tuesday. "Please use alternative routes, give yourself extra time to get to your destination, and drive with caution."

It was the second time in six hours that police issued a weather-related road warning.

Just after midnight, Didsbury RCMP responded to a jackknifed semi on the QEII northbound near Township Road 294. The highway was closed between there and Carstairs for several hours and reopened before 3 a.m.

RCMP said road conditions were "currently dangerous, with ice forming in many areas," and urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel.

"The public is asked to avoid all unnecessary travel and those who must travel are asked to do so safely while taking road conditions into consideration," the statement said.

As of early Tuesday morning, road conditions remained poor north of Airdrie. The QEII between Highway 2A and Bowden was partly snow-covered, with icy sections, slush, shoulder ice, and fog patches. Visibility was rated as fair.

Toward Calgary, the QEII was listed as bare and wet but still had black ice, icy wheel paths, blowing snow and slippery surfaces. Visibility was listed as good.

The snowfall warning for Airdrie has ended. Airdrie’s forecast calls for a high of 9°C with a chance of flurries and rain showers, and wind chills dipping to –13°C early in the day.
