A previously semi-trailer overturned Tuesday morning on the QEII just north of Airdrie has been cleared.

The crash was previously reported around 8:43 a.m. near Township Road 274, between Airdrie and Crossfield, according to 511 Alberta. Emergency crews responded, with southbound traffic facing congestion, delays and lane restrictions.

Calgary police issued a public advisory earlier in the day, warning of “extremely icy road conditions” throughout the city and urging drivers to use alternate routes and allow extra travel time.

"There are multiple collisions throughout the city on main roads including Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail," Calgary Police Service said in a statement posted to social media just after 7 a.m.

It was the second weather alert in under six hours. Just after midnight, Didsbury RCMP responded to a jackknifed semi on the QEII northbound near Township Road 294, shutting down the highway between there and Carstairs. The northbound lanes reopened before 3 a.m.

At the time, RCMP described highway conditions as dangerous due to widespread ice, asking the public to avoid unnecessary travel.

No injuries had been confirmed in the Tuesday morning rollover, and the cause of the crash was not immediately known.

By mid-Tuesday morning the QEII southbound towards Calgary was reported as slippery with slush, while further north, past Carstairs, road conditions were still hazardous with reports of shoulder ice, black ice, and fog patches on the QEII.

The snowfall warning for Airdrie ended overnight, but Environment Canada forecasts a high of 9 C Tuesday with a chance of flurries and rain showers. Wind chills were expected to dip to –13 early in the day.
