Other than some isolated drips and showers the last couple weeks, there has been a general lack of rainfall so far this Spring across the region. That changed Tuesday with the first widespread accumulating event of the season.
"It was the combination of two low pressure systems kind of meeting over Southeastern Saskatchewan and Southern Manitoba that led to the event we had yesterday," explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. "One of the disturbances originally came out of Alberta, with the second pushing northward out of North Dakota."

He added, due to how the system travelled through the province, parts of Western Manitoba along the Saskatchewan border as well as north of the Trans Canada highway, were under Snowfall Warnings for much of the day.
"The cold air being wrapped into the back side of the system dropped temperatures enough to make the precipitation fall as snow," he added. "You could clearly see that in temperatures throughout the day. Mid-afternoon Tuesday it was hovering between 0 and +1 in Brandon, but in Carman, Morden, Winkler, Altona and Winnipeg it was 8 degrees. Those regions were still in the warm section of the system at that time."

"Much cooler conditions are in place today across Western Manitoba, where temperatures will struggle to the +3 to 5 degree range," Sumner said. "Further east in the Red River Valley and Southeastern Manitoba, highs should land between 7 and 9. The cold front that swept through after the system's passage has allowed another shot of below average air to arrive on our doorstep"
Sumner noted it shouldn't remain cool for long, with seasonal conditions expected to return Thursday, with early indications suggesting above average temperatures for the final weekend of April.
Averages right now are 14 degrees for daytime highs and +1 over night.
