A group of art students from a school in the city's Centennial neighbourhood added a pop of colour to Winnipeg's Whiteout Street parties.

The Grade 9 youth from Hugh John MacDonald School were asked by Take Pride Winnipeg to paint concrete barriers for the exciting event.

The barriers, needed for safety reasons, were transformed into colourful art pieces to celebrate the Winnipeg Jets.

"We were invited to take our creative liberties and contribute art to our community on pieces that would otherwise be blank," said Danielle Rand, art teacher at Hugh John MacDonald, to the Winnipeg School Division. "It was a super fun day working together and being a small part in this large event."

The students, who were mentored by local mural artist Jen Mosienko, worked in groups of two and painted six barriers. They worked on their designs only days before the first Jets playoff home game.

"It was a cool experience," said Nasteho, a student at Hugh John McDonald.

“It is memorable because people can see the art I've done!” said art student Hanan

The barriers, painted in a parking lot on Donald Street and Graham Avenue, featured everything from the Jets logo to the team colours to slogans that many use during the playoffs.

"We're extremely proud of our student artists for representing our school positively," said Principal Jennifer Scott.
