The Pembina Climate Action Network (PCAN) is inviting families and residents to the 2025 Sustainability Fair and Morden Thrift Store Fashion Show on Saturday, April 26th, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at St. Paul's United Church in Morden.
This free, family-friendly event celebrates with activities, education, and a unique fashion show, all focused on encouraging sustainable living practices in the Pembina Valley.
A local movement for a global cause
"PCAN wanted to do something to bring more awareness about climate and environmental issues," said Edith Lovatt, one of the event organizers. "We created the idea of having a family-friendly, free event where people could come, do activities, and learn how to be more sustainable."
Sue Nelson echoed the urgency behind the event, adding, "We've taken advantage of the Earth for too long. I want my little grandsons to have good food, good places to live, and clean water to drink. Whatever little bit we can do to slow down climate change matters."
Interactive displays and activities for all ages
The fair will feature educational booths on recycling, sustainable transportation, and environmental conservation. Kids can enjoy a craft zone, a bike check-up, and even enter to win a free children's bike.
"Kids need to be influenced early," Nelson explained. "If we start from a very young age teaching sustainability, they will carry those habits throughout their lives."
In addition to kids' activities, there will be expert talks on local tree planting initiatives, proper recycling practices, and reducing household plastic waste. Sean Dias, Morden's city arborist, will also be on-site to talk about tree planting and urban sustainability.
Highlight event: Thrift store fashion show
One of the event's highlights will be the Morden Thrift Store Fashion Show, where all outfits will be sourced from the Morden Community Thrift Store and cost under $12.
"Every outfit on the runway saves clothing from going into the landfill," said Lovatt. "If we can do 50% of our clothing shopping at thrift stores, we are making a big difference."
The show creatively showcases how stylish and affordable sustainable fashion can be, helping attendees rethink their shopping habits.
Small changes, big impact
Lovatt and Nelson emphasized that making small, conscious changes can have a powerful impact.
"If you live close enough to work, try walking or biking instead of driving," Lovatt suggested. "It's about rethinking the small choices we make every day."
"Plastic is a huge issue," Nelson added. "One big step is sending kids to school with reusable lunch kits instead of plastic-wrapped foods."
The organizers encourage everyone to come with questions, curiosity, and a willingness to make simple changes that collectively create a healthier planet.
