A beloved face in Miami’s emergency services community has been recognized in a big way. Larry Mansell, who served as Fire Chief of the Miami Fire and Rescue Department for 49 years, was recently honoured as a Community Hero during a Winnipeg Jets home game.
The surprise came thanks to a heartfelt nomination submitted by his son, celebrating a lifetime of service that left a lasting mark on the small southern Manitoba town.
“My dad was the lucky recipient of a Community Hero award at the Jets’ final home game of the regular season,” says Larry’s daughter, Michelle Mansell, who is also a longtime member of the Miami Fire and Rescue team. “He’s done so much for the community, and this recognition means the world to our family.”

A legacy nearly 50 years in the making
Larry Mansell dedicated nearly five decades to protecting and serving the people of Miami. Beyond answering calls, he helped shape the department itself — laying the groundwork for the next generation of first responders, including his own children.
“It’s amazing, because he’s put so much of his heart and soul into this community,” says Michelle. “If you think of what a volunteer firefighter sees, it takes a toll. He deserves every honour he can get.”
Michelle, who has served alongside her father for 25 years as a medical first responder, reflected on how her own journey began. “I didn’t even get to apply,” she laughs. “As soon as I moved back home, my dad said, ‘You’re joining the fire department.’ And I haven’t regretted it for a single moment.”

A special night for the family
While Larry couldn’t attend the game in person, his daughter Michelle and grandson Sam were there to accept the award on his behalf — including a special Jets jersey presented as a replica of the Player of the Game jacket.
“It was too big of a night for my dad to go — after all, if you’ve served as Fire Chief for 49 years, you’re a few years older than that,” Michelle jokes. “But we had a great time. The Jets were amazing hosts, and we were treated like royalty.”
One moment stood out most of all: seeing Sam beam with pride for his grandfather. “I could not wipe the smile off his face. He was so proud of his grandpa and so excited to be part of the celebration. We felt spoiled and appreciated.”
Miami proud
For the Mansell family, the recognition is more than just an award — it’s a reminder of the power of community and the value of service.
“Everything my dad has done has been for this community,” Michelle says. “To see him recognized like this — it’s emotional. It reminds us why we do what we do.”
