The Winnipeg Police Service is warning about a growing social media trend resurfacing in local high schools involving graduating students and a live-action game known as “Assassin.”
The game sees players—typically Grade 12 students—attempt to “eliminate” each other using water pistols in an effort to be the last person standing, according to a release from police.
While intended as harmless fun among peers, the WPS points out that the game often extends beyond school property and can occur at any time of day, potentially alarming the general public.
Unaware community members may interpret the activity as a real threat, leading to police being called to respond. The WPS said that "All 'gun' calls, real or perceived, illicit a heightened police response and are investigated. diverting resources from genuine emergencies."
Police are asking parents and guardians to speak with their teens and discourage participation in the game.
“The resurgence of this trend can add unnecessary strain on police resources and place undue stress on unsuspecting community members,” the WPS said.
