Provincial public health officials are warning Manitobans of possible exposure to measles.

Officials say two new confirmed cases of measles have been reported in the Southern Health-Santé Sud region related to recent travel to Mexico.

Both individuals were at Southwood School in the Garden Valley School Division during the infectious period.

Anyone who attended the school on April 14 and 15 during school hours and after school until 5:30 p.m. may have been exposed. Also, anyone who was on bus #2683 before and after school, servicing Southwood School and Prairie Dale School, 39 Church St. South, Schanzenfeld, on April 14 and 15 from 8 to 10:35 a.m. and 3:30 to 6 p.m., may have been exposed.

Public health has communicated with the school, and anyone who may have been exposed will receive a letter.

Those who may have been exposed are asked to monitor symptoms until May 7.

Symptoms of measles typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure. Initial symptoms may include fever, runny nose, drowsiness, irritability and red eyes. Small white spots may also develop inside the mouth or throat.

The disease tends to be more severe in infants and young children and can be life-threatening.

Measles is a highly infectious communicable disease that is spread through droplets in the air, formed when coughing or sneezing.

Public health officials will continue to monitor the situation and provide updated information as necessary.
