The City of Portage la Prairie has officially launched its annual Spring Yard Waste Collection program, which will run throughout the month of May. The initiative is designed to help residents dispose of yard and green waste efficiently, aligning with their regular solid waste collection days.
"It's an annual program the city facilitates. We partner with a third-party contractor to collect yard waste right from the curbside, on the same day residents put out their solid waste.” said Paul Ziesman, Superintendent of Public Works.
Residents are encouraged to place their bagged yard waste at the curb in either clear plastic bags or compostable brown paper bags. While there is no limit to the number of bags residents can set out, each bag must not exceed 40 pounds in weight.
"This approach makes it convenient for people to clean up their yards without needing to haul anything themselves," Ziesman explained. "It helps keep the city looking great, especially as spring cleanup efforts continue."

Alongside the yard waste collection, city crews are busy with broader beautification efforts.
"Our transportation staff are working on street cleaning and sweeping," Ziesman noted. "Parks and recreation teams are focused on public parks, green spaces, and cemeteries — doing garbage pickup and smaller beautification projects."
Residents are advised to look out for posted signage, especially where street sweeping is underway, to avoid any delays or disruptions.
The city's coordinated cleanup efforts, including the yard waste program, are part of an ongoing commitment to keep Portage la Prairie clean, green, and welcoming as the warmer months approach.
