FortWhyte Alive has officially opened its new visitor centre, something that has been in the works for years.

The FortWhyte Alive Buffalo Crossing, Paul Albrechtsen Visitor Centre, is located along McGilivary Boulevard.

This new building, built to the highest global energy efficiency standards, will serve as both a physical and symbolic gateway to the 660-acre reclaimed urban green space.

"It is now the most energy-efficient building in Manitoba and will serve as an important gathering place for education and environmental sustainability in our city," said Ben Carr, MP for Winnipeg South Centre.

The building’s opening represents a major step forward in FortWhyte Alive’s $40-million Your True Nature capital campaign, which includes six distinct projects across the site. Buffalo Crossing is its largest and most ambitious initiative to date.

Meanwhile, the city has also added a new Winnipeg Transit bus route that will go directly to the new visitor centre.

"FortWhyte Alive’s mission has been to encourage actions leading to sustainable living," said Mayor Scott Gillingham. "There’s no better way to support this than by providing public transportation directly to their zero-carbon Buffalo Crossing centre."

Manitobans can visit the new space for free until April 27 as part of FortWhyte Alive’s Earth Week celebrations.
