Artwork from Calgary-based artist Santosh Korthiwada is on display at the Okotoks Public Library.
The new display, “Inseparable Fragments,” was brought to the library through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) TREX Travelling Art Exhibit program.
“We've really enjoyed every exhibit we've had. It's amazing to be able to highlight Alberta artists,” said Sarah Gillie, Okotoks Public Library Director. “We're part of the Arts and Learning Campus, so it's nice to have some art on our walls to keep things fresh.”
The exhibit features a series of digital photographic collages and explores longing, resilience, wonder, and adaptation.
The pieces dive into Korthiwada’s experiences and how memories of life in India and North America intertwine.
When choosing which exhibits to display, Gillie looks for colourful pieces.
“We have a lot of white walls, so the colorful artwork catches my eye, and it also catches the eye of the public when they come into the library,” she said.
Since the exhibit has been on display, Gillie has noticed Okotoks residents stopping by to enjoy the art.
“The library is a public space, we're not just about books, we are very much a gathering space,” she said. “If we can have some beautiful art on the walls for people to enjoy while they're spending some time here, that's a good combination.”
The “Inseparable Fragments” exhibit will be on display at the Okotoks Public Library until May 14.
After the exhibit, the library will continue to display artwork by local artists.
“It's the library's part of the community and this is just one way that we're able to work with our community, display some beautiful art, and support local artists,” Gillie said.
