Depending on the weather, the month of May will see the resumption of construction on Highway between the junction of Highway 2 and Saskatoon. The multi-year project has seen considerable progress. Now the Ministry of Highways states that work this year will continue to tackle the 15 kilometre segment of highway from the St. Denis access to Blucher Road. Construction on this zone began in June 2023.

This year’s project work includes shoulder widening, resurfacing and one set of passing lanes. It will also see the realignment of two roads that connect to Highway 5, the St. Denis access road to the north and Range Road 314 to the south. The work will improve sight lines and safety for motorists.

Additional work to be undertaken this construction season includes:

  • About 3.5 km of grading.

  •  Re-alignment of the St. Dennis access.

  •  Paving will be underway as the grading nears completion

The Ministry advises motorists that the work will come with disruptions and delays.

  • Traffic through the work zone will be reduced to one-way traffic, and traffic will be stopped from time to time.

  • When construction occurs on the St. Denis access, a local detour will be in place.

  • Motorists are reminded to obey all signage in the area and to slow to 60 km per hour in the work zone.

  • The Ministry of Highways appreciates the patience and understanding of all motorists as this work continues to improve the transportation system to improve our quality of life and support our export-based economy.

  • To detour around this work on Highway 5, you can use Highways 27 and 41 to the north or Trans-Canada Yellowhead Highway 16 to the south.

“We really appreciate motorists' patience and understanding as this work is occurring to improve our transportation system,” says Dan Palmer with the Ministry of Highways. “Although the inconvenience is in the short term, there is a long, long, long term benefit once that work is completed.”

The remaining work on the entire Highway project that will follow in subsequent years includes twinning, resurfacing and associated works on a 10 km segment of Highway 5 between Saskatoon and near the Highway 316 junction. That project has yet to be tendered.
